Because the cost of VOIP phone service is so low it’s one of the main selling points providers use to convince people to switch from their traditional phone service. Other than the phone you already have the internet connection and a VOIP adapter there is not much hardware you need. But there’s even more value than you think to the VOIP service. Usually VOIP service providers offer services the traditional company charges extra for. Call waiting, Caller ID, Conference calling, call forwarding features etc. All of these features can come standard with some providers. Another benefit is, since the VOIP service is digital, voicemails can be sent directly to your email and are easy to store. This is not a feature I’ve ever seen from any traditional phone service company.
