If you are currently a college student working toward a degree in accounting, you should feel confident that you will have plenty of job opportunities when you graduate. Even though the economy is doing very poorly right now and thousands of people have been laid off from their jobs, accounting jobs are still in demand. Another good thing about the accounting field is that there are several different types of jobs available.
Public accounting is probably what most colleges steer you toward because that is where most of the college professors worked. It involves working for a professional accounting firm where you will provide services to many different clients. These can range from small mom and pop type businesses to large, multi-national corporations. The size of the firm that you work for will dictate the client base. There is a lot of money to be made here, but you will have to put in a lot of long hours and maybe even a lot of travel.
An accounts receivable/accounts payable clerk is another option for accounting grads. You work for one company and are in charge of that company’s receivables or payables. It soon becomes routine work, as the payment cycle is the same each month. Once you work out a good system, it becomes an easy job and isn’t too stressful. This type of job is usually on the lower end of the pay scale though, so you won’t make a ton of money doing this.
Full charge bookkeepers are always in demand. In this job you will work for one company and be totally in charge of their books and records. All of the accounting and bookkeeping will fall on your shoulders. This is a great job for you if you like taking on responsibility and developing your own workflow and systems to get things done. The pay varies drastically depending on the size of the company you work for.
