While it may seem like it is probably a simple task to make a touch floor lamp, how these lamps work actually rests on a complicated principle of quantum theory. Most touch lamps work though a property of matter known as capacitance. This principle states that there are only a certain amount of electrons that any material can hold. So, the metal on any lamp can only hold a certain amount of electrons. However, because metal conducts electricity very well, when your touch a lamp, the amount of electrons the metal can hold increases a lot because of the addition of your body mass. A switch somewhere in the touch lamp sense this change and the light is turned on or off accordingly. It’s amazing how something apparently so simple really rests on a complicated scientific theory.
