Christmas, Barbeques & Deck Chairs
Christmas time in New Zealand means sun, surf and barbeques! Now that it’s more than half way through the year again (I can’t believe how time flies), it’s time to start thinking about planning our yearly Christmas celebrations.
For our family it means a barbeque out on the deck, shaded by our big offset umbrella, grilling the prawns and scallops on the hot coals and downing a few ice cold beers.
Anyone from the Northern hemisphere thinks it’s strange to have a hot Christmas, spending time outside sunbathing on the patio furniture instead of wrapped up in our winter woollies beside a roaring fire, but for us Kiwis the festivities are all about wearing jandals, shorts and singlet’s!
I’ve spent two Christmases in Europe, and while the snow was enchanting, you really can’t beat a hot summer’s day swimming in your pool and lounging around on deck chairs.
Patio Umbrella Frames

There are three types of frames that are common for patio umbrellas; wood, aluminum, and fiberglass. Lets take a look at the advantages that each one has.
Wood has a very classy and traditional look. If something in the canopy were to break, the parts are easy to replace. Wood is heavier than the other two material so the chances of it flying away are lessened. Wood breaks easier than the other material and can rot.
Aluminum is lightweight and easy to move. Umbrellas can be very difficult to move around when they are folded down, so if this is an issue than aluminum may be your choice. Unfortunately, their light weight makes them more prone to flying away. A secure base is key.
Fiberglass is both lightweight and strong. This is quickly becoming the choice material for umbrellas. Keep in mind its weight when purchasing them and buy a heavy base to prevent fly-away.
