Christmas, Barbeques & Deck Chairs
Christmas time in New Zealand means sun, surf and barbeques! Now that it’s more than half way through the year again (I can’t believe how time flies), it’s time to start thinking about planning our yearly Christmas celebrations.
For our family it means a barbeque out on the deck, shaded by our big offset umbrella, grilling the prawns and scallops on the hot coals and downing a few ice cold beers.
Anyone from the Northern hemisphere thinks it’s strange to have a hot Christmas, spending time outside sunbathing on the patio furniture instead of wrapped up in our winter woollies beside a roaring fire, but for us Kiwis the festivities are all about wearing jandals, shorts and singlet’s!
I’ve spent two Christmases in Europe, and while the snow was enchanting, you really can’t beat a hot summer’s day swimming in your pool and lounging around on deck chairs.
Black Patio Umbrella
Posted by admin in Home and Garden on June 3rd, 2009
I’ve just returned from a weeks trip to Granada in Spain with my wife, and we have had a wonderful time. we stayed at a lovely 4 star hotel called Los Almendros which had a unique and extremely pretty patio area that over looked a beautiful river with stunning mountains in the background. The most striking thing about the patio at first site, was that every single table had its own black patio umbrella which gave the area a really unique look. Black is an unusual color for a patio umbrella, and although I’m still not convinced it is a good path to follow (it did get quite hot under them, but then again black does attract heat), the aesthetic effect was truly stunning. I have never seen a patio look so nice, nor have I ever been struck enough to write aboout one before.
Why I Chose an Acrylic Patio Umbrella
Posted by admin in Home and Garden on May 28th, 2009
The season is just right for patio umbrellas, and I thought I’d treat my family this year to a brand new one. There are a lot of choices out there, and my budget was my number one concern. But at the same time, you never want to sacrifice quality. In the end, I chose an acrylic patio umbrella, and I couldn’t be happier. Acrylic is a really durable synthetic fiber, and the salesperson told me it typically lasts 50% longer than other synthetics. That’s what really sold me in the end. Why choose a material that you’ll have to replace often? When cost is a concern, you need to make every purchase count. The acrylic patio umbrella looks great in my outdoors – it really sets the tone of the entire patio. I love it, the kids love it, and everyone’s happy in the end. For its value, acrylic really shines through every time.
Patio Umbrella Frames

There are three types of frames that are common for patio umbrellas; wood, aluminum, and fiberglass. Lets take a look at the advantages that each one has.
Wood has a very classy and traditional look. If something in the canopy were to break, the parts are easy to replace. Wood is heavier than the other two material so the chances of it flying away are lessened. Wood breaks easier than the other material and can rot.
Aluminum is lightweight and easy to move. Umbrellas can be very difficult to move around when they are folded down, so if this is an issue than aluminum may be your choice. Unfortunately, their light weight makes them more prone to flying away. A secure base is key.
Fiberglass is both lightweight and strong. This is quickly becoming the choice material for umbrellas. Keep in mind its weight when purchasing them and buy a heavy base to prevent fly-away.
