A tripod lamp is the same as any other lamp. They differ in only one way and that is that they have a tripod for a stand. Generally a tripod is associated with large objects that need stability, but nowadays this tripod is used as a design element in lighting also.
For example if you were to get a floor lamp with a tripod, you would think that it is because the floor lamp is not very stable and you therefore need one. But you also get small table lamps with tripods and these are not so much for stability but because they look nice. Sometimes tripods are good because they are usually height adjustable, so you can set the same lamp at a range of different heights if you wish to.
The tripod is very different from the usual stalk or stand on which most lamps stand, and even if they do not serve any useful purpose, they are still very refreshingly different to look at. They do not offer any extra convenience for lights and are there only for show. If however you see a table lamp with a small tripod you will definitely want to get one. For some reason, the tripod although never used with lights until recently, suits almost any design of lamp. You can take any lamp, throw away the stand and replace it with a tripod and it will still look nice. In fact there are tiffany lamp designs with tripods and even if the traditionalists will get blue in the face, there is no denying that they look nice.
If you are looking for a lamp, unless it is a ceiling or a wall fixture, consider getting a tripod lamp. It will look very different and they are not that much more expensive anyway. The money that you pay is for the entire lamp, and all said and done, the tripod alone will not cost you all that much more. In a floor lamp, the tripod also serves a useful purpose and that is to provide more stability. If you are going in for one of the more expensive ones, it is better to get a tripod lamp. You wouldn’t want to lose your lamp within a week of you getting it simply because your dog bumped into it now, would you.
