When selecting a dog for guard duty, it is best to review the various breeds that are out there and pick the one that best suits your personality and your needs. There are hundreds of large to medium breed dogs that are not built or bred for guard dog duty and it is best to choose those that have the built in disposition of protectors or fighters.

Around the world there is a lot of argument to what dogs are the best and most of that argument comes from built in local dispensation towards a specific breed. One of the most controversial dogs to use is the Pit Bull. While this is clearly an excellent fighting dog, that does not make it automatically a great guard dog.

Universally, the German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, and Rottweiler are the top choices. In Europe, dogs like the Giant Schnauzer and the Puli are great choices, while in the Pacific Island area Akita Inus and Tosa Inus are considered the best breeds.
