The Oblong Glass Table
Posted by admin in Home and Garden on July 1st, 2009
For the life of me I can’t imagine why anyone would want an oblong glass table
in the dining room, but my partner had one delivered to our house today and I was forced to take receipt of it. So there it sits, in the middle of the formal room, the one we entertain in almost every evening, and it is glaring at me just as fiercely as I glare at it. My partner, a person with, well, questionable taste in home furnishings, has scads of money he made during the dot com run up, and he enjoys nothing more than slashing it around at boutiques and specialty stores that encourage potentially disastrous home furnishing decisions. It goes without saying that I wasn’t consulted about this particular item. I’ve made my mind up that an accident could appear suddenly and relieve me of this tasteless burden.
Happiness Around the Glass Top Dining Tables
The celebrants crowded thickly around the glass top dining tables
on the terrace of the outdoor restaurant. It had been an eventful day, and people wanted to enjoy themselves in the bright sunshine. Earlier in the day, a famous chef had agreed to cook paella in a huge sauté pan over an open fire. Many of the citizens considered paella a special dish, and they felt enormous joy at the prospect of eating outdoors among their neighbors. The local wine merchant, a man with a deep commitment to the community, made available several barrels of new white wine. The combination of gourmet paella and fresh white wine generated a communal awareness of how wonderful life could be when the taste buds shivered pleasantly in anticipation of a treat. Many of the citizens, carried away by their joy and sense of well being, hummed light, happy tunes and greeted each other with a smile.
Peculiar Glass Table and Chairs

The invitation to dinner had been printed on odd colored paper, and to make the presentation even more mysterious than usual, the paper itself was a size not normally found in the United States. The size of the paper could be found in France or Spain, for example, but it simply was not cut that size in America. However, the startling aspect of the dinner invitation was increased when, upon arrival, I noticed that the party was seated at a peculiar glass table and chairs. What made this arrangement completely outside my experience was the deliberate attempt to jar my senses loose and make me think disturbing thoughts about how important it is to not create angular objects. Of course, the final disturbance, if I may put it that way, was the outrageous shape of the salmon; it was perfectly square.
