Considerations for a Garden Tractor Purchase

Push mowers are a common staple for many households, particularly those in communities with less than and acre to mow.Yet, many who have drenched themselves in their own sweat ogle those garden tractors and lawn tractors on display at the local home improvement center.

Though a garden tractor can potentially make the chore of mowing the lawn and other yard work a much easier task, there are a couple factors to consider.

Size and Terrain of the Yard

Typically, push mowers will accomplish the task of mowing lawns less than an acre in area.

Lawns with hilly features may still be mowed with push mowers, though they require larger rear wheels and sometimes motorized assist. For a lawn of greater land area, the task of mowing regularly becomes more time consuming. Lawn tractors are appropriate for areas up to and around 2 acres. For a yard that is large in area, such as 10 acres, a garden tractor may be more appropriate.

If considering such a purchase, be sure that the terrain of the land is not such that the tractor mower would turn over with the operator on it.

Typical Use

Though a lawn tractor and garden tractor may sound like the same thing, they actually have their differences.

Besides a greater stamina for mowing larger acreages, garden tractors are designed with greater towing capabilities. Typical towing purposes include bringing supplies to distant areas, spreading fertilizer, and to aerating the lawn.

Age and Physical Condition

Consider the age and physical condition of the person tending to the yard.

The elderly and those who have certain health conditions or disabilities that just simply prevent them from using a push mower. In both of these circumstances, the need for a garden tractor can be justified for practically any size of lawn.
