The importance of a Pet Life Jacket

The joys of the sea are known to many people who enjoy sailing as a hobby.  Of course many of these people are also dog owners who like the company of their canine friend on board the boat.  One thing that it is vital to be aware of is the importance of a pet life jacket to keep their dog safe.

You may think that this sounds like a crazy idea, after all, everyone knows how well dogs swim.  But just think about it, even if you are a great swimmer, would you want to be caught in a storm or find yourself on board a sinking boat without a life jacket?  A dog is just the same.  He will not fare well for long should he end up in freezing water or with large waves washing over him and young, elderly or unwell dogs would perish in minutes.  However, don’t feel that you should just leave him in the garden in his dog kennel while you go out and enjoy yourself.  A dog life jacket is not very expensive and will ensure the safety of your canine friend should he end up overboard.

A dog’s life vest, just like a human one, is covered in highly reflective and visible material so you can easily spot him in the water (after all, he won’t be able to call out to you).  They are specially designed to be very comfortable and secure with easy to fix straps to hold it on.  Many of the jackets also have a strong handle on the top so that you can lean over the side of the boat and pull him out rather than getting into the water and pushing him from below.

There are hundreds of places where you can buy a dog life jacket and so there is no excuse for your dog not to be completely safe on your boat with you.

Dog Life Jackets Are A Smart Precaution

All dogs love the water and are great swimmers, right?  Not necessarily.  There are certain breeds that have more difficulty than others.  For example, very lean breeds such as Dobermans or Boxers don’t have much natural flotation, so they have to work extra hard to stay afloat.  Also, very cold waters can affect a dog just like it affects humans and the risk of hypothermia is very real.  And anyone familiar with the water, whether it be lakes, rivers or oceans, knows that conditions can change quickly and there can always be unexpected storms, waves, currents etc.  A dog life jacket can be a real life saver.

Given all the potential problems around the water, why put your dog at unnecessary risk?  If you’re boating, you make sure all passengers have a life jacket, donn’t you (I hope so!)  So why not do the same thing for your dog?  As mom always said, “better safe than sorry!”
