The Newbie Guide To The Propane Camping Lantern

When it comes to camping lanterns, campers have really come to rely on the newer propane models for a source of safe and efficient heat, light and comfort.  Unfortunately, because these lanterns are so convenient many new campers overlook the necessity to have sufficient fuel and spare parts to keep these lanterns functioning in the wilderness.

Propane lanterns work in much the same way as liquid fuel camping lanterns.  The primary difference is that the fuel is supplied by a propane cylinder which is inserted into the bottom of the lantern.  The propane, being under pressure, will feed through the lantern and out of the mantles.  The lamp will continue to give off light until the fuel is exhausted or the mantles are damaged or broken.

Propane fueled camping lanterns are regarded as being safer than liquid fuel lanterns.  The propoane is safely contained in a cylinder and refueling is as simple as swapping the empty cylinder for a new one.  For longer continuous use, the lamp can be attached to a hole or other appropriate accessory and fed from a larger propane tank.

The small propane cylinders are relatively expensive and do not last all that long. This is one of the main reasons that many campers simply attach them to a larger propane tank.  The biggest disadvantage of these lanterns is heat.  As such, they are generally unsuitable for indoor use during the summer time.  Therefore, in the event of a summertime natural disaster, a propane lantern would be unsuitable for use as a source of emergency lighting.

Propane lanterns have been around for about 15 years and are pretty reliable.  They are convenient for use by newer campers so long as the campers have ready access to additional cylinders or the means to feed the lantern from a larger propane tank.  All in all, propane lanterns provide a safe and efficient source of outdoor lighting.  In the winter, they can provide an additional source of heat.  As such, the propane lantern is an indispensable addition to any camper’s stockpile of camping accessories.
