During the 19th century, a mens silk scarf or the cravat became a fashionable accessory for men to wear and was considered a basic item that should be found in every man’s wardrobe. The major supplier of these silk scarves during this time was the country of Sweden, dominated by merchants such as and Casparsson & Schmidt and K. A. Almgren. In addition to supplying these silk scarves, they also produced bands and ribbons as well as producing the scarves in Scandinavian countries like Norway, Finland, and other countries. The original type of scarf or headscarf included two small pleats and sometimes trimmed fringe. Sometime around 1840, single or double knotted fringe was considered to be highly stylish and scarves began to be worn by men as both a shawls or headwear.
