Founded in November 1868, Hollister CA was originally part of the San Justo Homestead Association. In fact, Hollister was originally slated to be called San Justo, but it was decided that too many towns in California were already named after Spanish saints. Henry Hagen, a local winemaker, suggested the town be named after William Hollister, the leader of the association. Hollister CA was incorporated in 1872.
After years of steady growth, Hollister CA is home to over 34,000 people. Over half of all households in Hollister contain children under the age of eighteen, and over one third of the residents are children. This gives Hollister a definite family-oriented atmosphere, and sports events at the local high school draw cheering crowds of supporters. Hollister continues to feel the influence of local ranches and horse farms, giving it a distinctly rural feel despite its urban setting.
