Learning About the Past

When I was a kid, way back when and still in middle school, my favorite class was history. While so many other students hated the class along with the dates, names, and seemingly useless facts that came with it I was fascinated and constantly reading ahead. When it came time to write a paper or report – be it on information about historical sites or a biography about some famous person – I was always ready for the challenge and eager for the excuse to learn something in depth and to really tackle an interesting topic.

Without a doubt, my favorite subset of history was always American History, primarily the period running from the Revolution right up until Reconstruction. As an American, I was always amazed at how much had happened on these shores in such a short amount of time – and so relatively recently in historical terms – to get us to where we find ourselves today. While I’m all grown up now, and no longer in school, I remain an avid student of history. As a member of three history book clubs my life, and my book case, suffers from no shortage of history.
