When you think of a martini do you mean the drink or the glass. The drink martini came well before the martini glass, but we all associate the two together -a martini is not a martini unless it is in the martini glass! Ever since James Bond everybody has heard of a martini even though it first came into being during the 1860s- there is no definitive date or place of invention. The glass is based upon a cocktail glass that allows the drink to remain cool even without ice; you use the stem to handle the glass and refrain from touching rest of the glass. The martini is made from gin and vermouth mixed together and strained into a chilled glass, garnished with an olive and served. The shape of the martini glass is said to allow the bouquet of the gin to breathe.
