Do HEPA Vacuum Cleaner Filters Work?

Some people have terrible allergies that are caused by dust mites.  One of the saviors of the day is when they came up with HEPA filters for vacuum cleaners.  But does one of the most popular vacuum cleaner parts actually work?

I used to work in the carpet cleaning business prior to joining the medical field.  This was prior to the HEPA vacuum cleaners.  I wil say that medically, we use HEPA filter masks for health reasons when we have patients who have diseases like TB because the filters work pretty well at keeping out potentially dangerous contaminants.  So, the filters are pretty reliable, at least in the medical field.  But are they in the cleaning field?

I know many hospitals use them, including the one I work out of where they have carpeting, but that still doesn’t answer the question scientifically.   The University of Manchester in England did a study and it showed no real difference between Hepa filter vacuums and regular filter vacuums.  The air quality during cleaning was essentially close to the same.  So, the results are mixed.  Considering Hepa vacuum cleaners are more considerably more expensive than regular vacuum cleaners, this is something to consider when purchasing your next vacuum cleaner.
