Owning A Wireless Dog Fence
Posted by GuestPoster in Pets and Animals on September 4th, 2011
Wireless dog fences are a radio wave fencing system. It comes with a transmitter that is either battery operated of plugs into an outlet, and there is a shock collar that your dog will wear. The system cordons off an area that is safe for you dog to be in. They will have the freedom of a fenced yard and will be able to roam their yard regularly as they need outside time too.
This fence will put up boundaries of the property without the use of a physical barrier. The signal sends a radio wave to the collar which will emit a warning sound when the pet goes near the boundary. If the warning is ignored and the pet defies the boundary of the fence, the pet receives a mild electric shock similar to static electricity. The pet will soon learn to avoid the invisible fence area. This makes it an effective virtual barrier. Animals that are not wearing the collar are not affected by the underground wire.
These fence-less boundary systems are most accurately called electronic pet containment systems. In cost analysis they are much cheaper and more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than wooden and chain link fences. Though these are very useful and powerful dog training tools, it helps to read various wireless dog fence reviews before making any decisions.
Rather than using an underground wire, wireless dog fences emit a radio signal from a central unit, and activate when the pet travels beyond a certain radius from the transmitter. In another type, the collar uses a GPS signal to determine the predetermined virtual fence, without the need for any physical installation at all. This system allows some flexibility, like it has a simpler inclusion of “islands” within the boundary, easier changes to the boundary area. The stimulus produced on the pet may be applied more frequently and at a greater strength. When the animal approaches the boundary the collar will warn the dog with a beeping sound. If the warning is ignored a mild electronic shock will follow.

Dog Poop Bags – the Environmental Friendly Alternative
Posted by GuestPoster in Pets and Animals on March 11th, 2011
Dog Poop Bags introduced recently in the market have been widely accepted by dog owners and are now easily available in various pet retail stores as well as on pet care websites. Dog poops bags allow for easy collection and disposal of dog poop unlike previous messy methods which results in messy scenarios and inconvenience.
Dog poop bags have been there for quite some time and now the latest entrant is biodegradable poop bags, which are not only easy to dispose but are good for the ecosystem, as they decompose into their natural elements on prolonged exposure to sun, air or water and hence are easy to dispose at the garbage dump yards. Further various government bodies have installed public poop bag dispensers at various convenient locations, allowing for easy and convenient disposal of dog waste bags. Dog poop bags are available in various colors and sizes, and can be purchased in small quantities or larger consignments.
One of the advantages of using biodegradable poop bags is that it is not messy as its earlier alternatives such as plastic bags and Ziplocs, which would at times become very unhygienic and smelly to handle. Dog poop bags feature an inbuilt system of preventing the poop smell from escaping the bag and are very small and convenient to handle. Another important reason to use dog waste bags is to ensure that when you go for a stroll with your dog in the evening, you are well prepared for any emergency situation and also ensure that the dog poop is not left open in the street, which is not only against the law but is also very harmful for the environment. Dog poop if allowed to remain uncollected will result in release of various nitrogenous gases and is an idle breeding ground for fleas and germs.
An awareness drive for using biodegradable poop bags has resulted in wide acceptance and usage of dog waste bags among the entire dog-owners community, who are walking hand in hand to do their part for our environment and ecosystem.
A Comfortable Bed for Your Pet
Posted by GuestPoster in Pets and Animals on February 1st, 2011
Do you have a pet dog in your home? Does it have this particular habit of sleeping on your bed or on your couch? If you answered yes to both questions, then you might have experienced having some ‘arguments’ with your pet. You might have experienced coaxing your canine companion to get down of your sofa or bed, only to be growled at or given those puppy dog eyes that you could not resist. According to some reviews, dogs like to sleep on couches or beds because of the comfort that they fell there. Also, this is their way of telling you that they are the alpha animal in the house, and being in an elevated position emphasizes that title. If you do not want your pet to further develop that habit, then it might be high time for you to get it its own bed or house.
No, that does not mean that you would have to get your pet its own queen-sized bed nor will you have to build it its own house complete with dining, living and bathing area. If you would just like to provide a bed for your bed, you could use an old box or a basket and line it with a blanket and a pillow. If you would like to get a really cool dog bed, you could order one that is readymade. You would be able to search for a cool dog bed in the Internet or in your local stores. On the other hand, you could get it its own dog house. You would be able to teach your canine companion to stay outside during certain times of the day. If you fear that your dog would overheat, you could place its house in a shady area so as to keep it cool and comfortable.

The Risks Of Heartworm Treatment For Dogs
Posted by GuestPoster in Pets and Animals on December 14th, 2010
As a campaign by the American Heartworm Society states: “Preventing heartworm disease is easy. Treating it, sadly, is anything but.” Heartworm treatment for dogs can be risky, but the risks of inaction are even worse.
Sadly, even though there is an abundance of preventative heartworm medicine for dogs on the market, heartworm infection remains a big problem. Heartworm infections continue to occur if the dog owner has failed to administer the medication correctly, or if the dog’s body failed to absorb the active ingredient in the medication.
Some dogs are so badly infested with heartworms that their heart ceases to function normally. If your dog gets to this point, urgent surgery is likely to be the best option for your pet. Surgeons will physically remove the offending heartworms from your dog’s organs, thus freeing up the heart to function properly again. Usually, not all heartworms will be removed during surgery, and follow-up treatments are required to completely kill the heartworm population.
Presuming your dog has already had (or doesn’t need) surgery, your veterinarian may administer an arsenic-based compound called Melarsomine (branded as Immiticide). This drug is injected by your veterinarian deep into the dog’s muscle, and is very effective in killing adult heartworms. The use of arsenic-based drugs are risky, and dogs often have to be stabilized before treatment can begin. Some dogs, such as the elderly, are not recommended for this treatment, so alternatives may be sought.
The “off-label” use of regular heartworm medicines will help kill off any larvae or microfilariae that still remains in the dog’s system.
Following treatment, the dog must rest for up to 6 weeks to avoid complications from treatment. Other medications such as aspirin or steroids may be prescribed to combat the negative side effects that may result from the dead or dying heartworms.
The BiOrb Fish Tank is Great
Posted by GuestPoster in Pets and Animals on December 4th, 2010
An increasingly popular visual decoration found in homes these days are fish aquariums. They certainly catch the attention of those in the room and they add something special to your atmosphere. If you are thinking about the addition of a fish aquarium, you might consider a biorb fish tank. These aquariums are completely functional fish tanks and they come in some unique designs that will be most certainly catching the attention of many. As the name of this tank implies, they are round shaped aquariums with a solid metal bottom in a variety of colors. The colored metal holder matches the bold stripe that rings the fish aquarium opening. These round tanks come in 4, 8, 9, or 16 gallon sizes.
If you desire a variation on the circular globe design, you might consider the cylinder aquarium. It can be viewed from various 360-degree viewpoints. This unique shape will let you design your aquarium with plants, rocks, and other fish aquarium accessories. Another option is the cubed aquarium style. This cube has colored sides on the tank which creates instant eye-appeal. It comes in black, red, and white, which gives a lot of options for designing. These Biorb aquariums come as an entire kit complete with a filtration system.
The unique and distinctive tanks have their own lighting that goes perfectly into a top section of the biorb. The lighting consists of halogen bulbs that are lesser wattage lighting so it does not encourage algae growth in your fish aquarium. Replacement lamps that offer a moonlight blue type of mood lighting makes the color effects of the tank extra vivid. All of the fish kits have all necessary pieces for your tank system to get running. If you plan on tropical fish you need a heater to keep your fish tanks water steady and fish worthy.

Why Dogs Itch
Posted by GuestPoster in Pets and Animals on December 1st, 2010
If you are like most people, when you start to see your dog itch, you go and get some spot-on flea treatment or flea powder. You put this on your dog, but still they itch and scratch non-stop. What else could it be besides fleas?
What many people don’t realize is that there are a variety of reasons why your dog might be itchy. And while fleas are quite high on the list, when talking about constant, relentless itching, there are quite a few other reasons that deserve attention as well.
The first category is parasites, which fleas definitely fall into. However, some species of mites (more commonly known as mange) can also cause intense itching. Tick bites are another common parasite responsible for dog itching. Fleas are probably the most common. You can notice the actual flea on your dog, or you may notice the flea ‘dirt’ on places where your dog stays. To determine if it is regular dirt or flea dirt, gather some of the dirt and place a few drops of water on it. If it turns red at all, then it is the dried blood residue from the fleas.
The second category, and probably the most vast, is allergies. Dogs, like man, can be allergic to just about anything and everything. Pollen, dust, grasses, wool, plastic, pesticides, and food are some of the top offenders, however anything is possible. These are also the hardest to figure out and can take the longest to get under control. Food allergies is probably the easiest as you can control what ingredients your dog eats and thereby control the allergy.
The last category is nutrition, or better yet, lack of nutrition. Just because you buy a dog food that is labeled ‘balanced and complete’, it may not be the best food for your particular dog. Other than taking care of parasite problems causing itching, improving nutrition is probably one of the best actions for dog itchy skin relief. When your dog does not get the necessary nutrients and enzymes for his body, the skin and coat can become very dry and itchy, and the immune system can become hyper-sensitive. Both of these contribute to constant dog itching.
Sometimes your dog’s itching is a gradual build-up and other times it just comes on all of a sudden. You must really observe your dog and try to figure out what is causing all the itching. Listening to all that scratching is annoying for us, but it is aggravating and painful for your dog. Do what you can to put a stop to it.
