Probably one of the most successful novels in the genre of science fiction is written by Douglas Adams. This novel has received a lot of awards and laudations here and there. It has been adapted into a computer game, a TV series, a comic book and even a two series of towels. It has gathered its own cult and up to this day has been read by both those who are starting to read science fiction and those who are just curious about the book. This is The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
With all the adaptations that this novel has undergone, there are several versions that are mutually contradictory because of the several instances of being rewritten. All the stories however follow the conquest of one the main character in the name of Arthur Dent, a hapless Englishman and several other supporting characters that make the story an enjoyable read. Their group travels to the legendary planet Magrathea in quest for the answer of the ultimate question of life. Injected with humor and wit, this book capitalizes on human practices and behavior and the society by portraying the lives of aliens and foreign entities. The way the author presented human follies and the likeness of this novel to the real world makes this book a must read.
The bittersweet comparison of some of the characters of this book with some of the people who are just greedy with power and wealth make this book an interesting read. In a way, it likens the system of the aliens with our current set-up regardless of race and gender. The way the book is written and presented makes it an easy read that it sold more than 1 million copies already by the year 1984. many people say it is one of the best sci fi books written.
