Wedding Gift Ideas on a Tight Budget

Weddings are supposed to be a festive occasion, but during tough economic times they can also cause a great deal of stress. You want to get your friends or family members a wedding gift that they will really enjoy, but if you are on a tight budget this can often be a great challenge. Fortunately, with a bit of creativity it is possible to find a great gift without spending an arm and a leg.

If you have a special talent, why not use your skills to create a homemade gift? A homemade quilt or needlework project can make for a personalized gift that your recipients are sure to appreciate. A piece of artwork that can be hung on the wall or placed on a table can make for an excellent wedding present that will be remembered for years.

A magazine subscription also makes a great gift for newlyweds. If the couple is moving into a new home together a subscription to a home magazine like Better Homes and Gardens is always a welcome choice. Other ideas for great gift subscriptions include Real Simple, House Beautiful, or Good Housekeeping.

Finally, an inexpensive kitchen accessory is always popular with new couples. Most couples will already have the basics, so you’ll need to think creatively to find something they may not have. One idea to consider is a decorative oil and vinegar set. These fine bottles will last for years and will serve the recipients well for formal dining at home. These items come in a variety of styles and price ranges, so it won’t be hard to find a beautiful set that will fit into your budget.

Whether you decide to go with a homemade item or purchase a stylish oil drizzler or other kitchen accessory, the happy couple is sure to be pleased with your selection. Finding an affordable gift is not always easy, but with a little bit of imagination you will be able to find the perfect fit for your recipients.

Hair thinning scissors: How to use them.

Not everybody needs to go to the hairdresser that often. All that some people need to do is thinning out some hair. You could off course do this at your hairdresser and pay a lot of money for it, but you could also decide to do it yourself. This may sound very hard to do, but all you need is a friend assisting you and some hair thinning scissors. They are a small investment but just think at all the money you could save if you did the work yourself. You don’t have to be an expert to make good results with a thinning scissor. If you do it for the first time, ask a friend to help you. She could assist or do it for you.

Customized Magnets as Gifts

Have you ever thought about creating your own customized magnets? It’s really not as difficult as what you might think. I actually recently created some myself for a friend that is getting married. I had designed their wedding invitation so what I did was I cut out differing pieces of the invitation and printed out pictures of them at reduced size and cut those out as well. The next thing I did was to use a whole punch to cut out half inch circles. I used those small glass beads that go in the bottom of flower vases to glue the picture onto so that you can see the picture through the dome. I used a silicone glue to do this. After doing that I glued the magnet onto the back. It is a really cool gifts, and they didn’t cost very much.

The Star of David Tattoo

This tattoo has a lot of history behind it; both good and bad.  Early on in the Jewish religion the Star of David symbol is believed to a reference to God and how he protected David as he fled from Saul’s attacks.  This attribute of God being the protector is also seen many times in the Psalms.

The Star of David is a 6 sided star that became even better known through its uses in World War II.  Hitler, recognizing this symbol as a Jewish marking, decided to mark those who were Jews with a six sided patch that was required to be worn on the outside jacket of all.

This contrast has given rise to the Star of David tattoo being one of the more well known tattoos that people choose to get.  Most tattoos of stars do not bring as much meaning of pain and protection as this does, but for many this a proud expression of faith.

Christmas, Barbeques & Deck Chairs

Christmas time in New Zealand means sun, surf and barbeques! Now that it’s more than half way through the year again (I can’t believe how time flies), it’s time to start thinking about planning our yearly Christmas celebrations.

For our family it means a barbeque out on the deck, shaded by our big offset umbrella, grilling the prawns and scallops on the hot coals and downing a few ice cold beers.

Anyone from the Northern hemisphere thinks it’s strange to have a hot Christmas, spending time outside sunbathing on the patio furniture instead of wrapped up in our winter woollies beside a roaring fire, but for us Kiwis the festivities are all about wearing jandals, shorts and singlet’s!

I’ve spent two Christmases in Europe, and while the snow was enchanting, you really can’t beat a hot summer’s day swimming in your pool and lounging around on deck chairs.

My Kid Got a Pool Float

The other day my kid got a pool float for his birthday. You should’ve seen the look on his face. It was priceless. He had a huge smile and was instantly begging to go down to the pool and try it out even though it was already past dark. I unfortunately had to tell him no.

The next day though I took him and he was so happy to see all the other little kids with their own pool floats. Since his was green, he liked his the most because his favorite color is green. It is really great to be able to spend quality time outdoors with the little guy. He is a great swimmer but now he can have a ball floating around, too.

Guitar Blogs

I first started playing the guitar around the age of nine. While I only fumbled around with the funny looking instrument at first, it wasn’t long before I had insisted that my parents allow me to take guitar lessons and, after months of whining, they finally gave into my demands. After several years of playing and practicing I started a band with some middle school friends and somehow and for a reason that is long since forgotten, the guys started calling me Axel. The nickname stuck, and by the time I started another band in high school people could barely remember that I used to in face, be named Brian.

In high school, I started another band and we managed to somehow stay together into our late twenties playing local and regional gigs, making a decent amount of money, and having a great time doing it. Today, no longer playing in the band, I run a fairly popular website – Axel’s Guitar Blog – and make a decent living recounting my days on the road with the band. While I long for the days of the stage my new life as a husband and a father keeps me grounded, and behind the computer, and I suppose that’s where I belong these days.

My Reflection In Glass Tables

I can’t stand them; they look back at me as I walk past them in the sunlight on my way to the coffee shop. The tops of glass tables

are a bane to mankind because they reveal the inner soul of the person looking into them. In that way, they are just like the mirror in Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. That’s not to say that I am in any danger of dissolving into a puddle of decadence, but more often than not I am suffering a violent hangover threatening to end in derangement or death. This journey, then, past the mirrored surfaces of the glass tables etches in sharp relief my struggles with my inability to finish my novel, and my efforts to seek relief for this writer’ block in the bottom of a liquor bottle.

on the terrace of the outdoor restaurant. It had been an eventful day, and people wanted to enjoy themselves in the bright sunshine. Earlier in the day, a famous chef had agreed to cook paella in a huge sauté pan over an open fire. Many of the citizens considered paella a special dish, and they felt enormous joy at the prospect of eating outdoors among their neighbors. The local wine merchant, a man with a deep commitment to the community, made available several barrels of new white wine.  The combination of gourmet paella and fresh white wine generated a communal awareness of how wonderful life could be when the taste buds shivered pleasantly in anticipation of a treat. Many of the citizens, carried away by their joy and sense of well being, hummed light, happy tunes and greeted each other with a smile.
