Expert Plumber Advice on Draining Water Heaters
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Garden on April 4th, 2011
Water heaters with tank systems store cold water and heat it up before dispensing it out of hot water taps. Over time, minerals and other sediments from the water tend to accumulate in the water heater tank. Unless these sediments are regularly cleaned out, it can affect the efficiency of your water heater and shorten its life span. Professionals from plumbing companies Dallas, TX recommend fully draining your water heater about once a year, especially if you live in an area where hard water flows from the taps. In this post, plumbing company Dallas, TX experts guide you through safely draining your water heater.
Before anything, turn off the power supply to your water heater. If you are using a gas-powered heater, turn the thermostat to the pilot setting. For electric heaters, turn off the breaker at the main panel. Also turn off the cold water supply to your water heater tank. A copper pipe running to the top of the tank serves as a shutoff valve but it would be better if you could turn off the water from the main.
Attach a length of garden hose to the bottom drain valve on the water tank and run it into a drain. Meanwhile, have someone turn on a hot water faucet in the house so that a vacuum doesn’t form in the water lines.
Open the drain valve near the bottom of the water tank. Be sure not to touch the pressure relief valve, installed by the side of the tank somewhere near the top. Be careful as the water drains out of the water tank, since it could still be very hot. Gloves and protective eye wear may be necessary. Observe the appearance of the water as it drains. It should go from very dark and rusty to clear before the entire contents of the water tank runs out. Once the water is running clear, you can close the drain valve on the tank. (On some water tanks, the heating element could be damaged if all the water is allowed to run out.)
Turn off the hot water tap you had opened a while ago and turn the cold water supply back on. Once the tank has filled, turn back the power supply as well.
Selecting The Best Chainsaw

If you need a chainsaw then you should look for a perfect fit between you and your chainsaw. Finding the right piece is a difficult task but the right piece for you will make your work easier and faster. It is better to chose that model that you can operate comfortably and has the capabilities to perform the work you want it to do. The more comfortable you are while using it the less is the chance of the any unfortunate accident. For light duty work, the electric chainsaw is the best choice that offers many advantages over the gasoline ones. However for heavy duty work, a gasoline chainsaw is must.
It is wise to get well rehearsed in the specifications of this machine before having it so that you can decide which one is the perfect piece for you. If you are a beginner then bar type blade is the best choice than the bow blade type. Make it sure before buying that the length of the bar should be at least on third longer than the tree diameter which you are going to cut. The engine power of the chainsaw is relative to the length of the saw. A well tuned engine with more displacement and sharp blades offers quick, easy and precise cutting.
It is wise to ask for a demo of the machine before buying it. If possible, perform the demonstration by yourself as it will give you the idea whether the machine is right for you or not. If you do not know much about the different brands of the chainsaws, it is better to read the chainsaw review articles written by experts on the internet. Most of the online reviews about the Poulan chainsaws show that they are the best in this trade and offer machines that are safe to use.

One of the main attractions to any yard can be ponds or pools. Swimming pools that are built in a tiled areas are some of the most beautiful, and ponds that are adorned with flowers and have goldfish in them can make your yard very relaxing. While these can both be enjoyed during the day time, why not light them up and make them enjoyable at night as well with some pool or deck lighting? There are many different ways that you can have waterproof outdoor lighting schemes, the best way to determine what you want is to do some research online.
First, consider the size of your pool or pond and how much lighting you think they will need. Since you are not swimming in your pond a low glowing light is a great way to accent the pond and the fish that are inside. The light can even be colored if you choose, light blue or green can have a great effect on the plant life around the pond. Pool lights should be brighter to avoid any types of accidents for your family and your guests. However, the decision is up to you if you would just like one end of your pool lit with a powerful light, or if you would like to use dimmer lights periodically throughout the perimeter of your pool. Patio umbrella lights are nice around a tiled or paved area, for a real holiday feeling.
If your pool is tiled keep in mind that the lights can be arranged to reflect off of the tiles and add a warm glow to the pool. These decisions are some of the few that you will need to consider before jumping into certain outdoor lighting ideas. Be sure to choose something you are comfortable with and will enjoy. If you are unsure as your pool company if they can show you some images of the different lighting schemes they can install in both pool and pond.
More Than Just Solar Power House Cost
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Garden on February 1st, 2011
One major resource that North Americans enjoy is ‘power’. That is electric power without failure so they can plug in their toaster and enjoy their toast every morning. Not all of us have this privilege, especially if you’re living in third world countries. With the constant rise of prices of almost everything, we often find ourselves in debate whether things are needs or lifestyle items. Power source, however, among other things, is worth talking about. It’s the best time you consider the advantages of using solar energy.
Solar power is energy collected from the sun’s rays and converted to electricity. It’s one such alternative to going through the utility power company. Solar power is a very usable alternative source of energy for our homes and is becoming more common to use these days.
The question of cost when it comes to solar energy would be how much you will save, rather than how much it will cost you. The total solar power house cost is a reasonable investment as electricity rates go sky-high due to inflation. The average cost of solar power in an average American home is about $20,000 but the good news is that retail pricing is constantly reduced because of its rising demand. Another thing is that, it could still be reduced up to two-thirds if you’ve got skills and creativity to set up your own system.
Aside from unloading yourself of that monthly electric bill or bothering yourself with the budget allotment for electricity, convenience and ease of use is not a concern. If you’re practical and wise, a few adjustments and simple choices you make in the appliances you use will definitely diminish your amount of energy consumption and still enjoy the current conveniences you have.
And since solar energy is renewable, you will never run out of it. No more power outages. No more dependence on power supplied by electric companies that fail or fluctuate from time to time. You make your own energy and you can make the most out of it every time.
You can be worry-free and environment-friendly at the same time. Using solar power keeps our planet away from increasing the effects of global warming and air pollution. Consequently, you’re not only helping yourself but rather the entire humanity.
Consider Solar Panels for Homes
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Garden on January 28th, 2011
Installing solar panels for homes is a great way to lessen your impact on the planet and preserve energy for future generations. Sunlight is a free, renewable energy source, but the cost of installing the panels themselves is relatively high.
Before pursuing this pricey endeavor, consider the amount of natural light your home receives on average. Keep in mind that even on a cloudy day, sun rays still peak through the sky. When there is no sunlight, however, there are power grids, which store excess energy you will have collected. These work like backup batteries and add to the overall value of the panels.
Photovolatic cells in the panels convert sunlight into electricity and send currents to your home. To be more cost efficient, start switching out your current appliances for more energy efficient ones, from light bulbs to refrigerators. The less energy required to use a refrigerator, the less energy you need to collect.
Since this process is an investment, you may as well go for the best products available. Panels can last a long time (between twenty and thirty years for modern designs), and typically come with a warranty. Do plenty of research on the manufacturers. This is a growing technology, so companies who have been creating the product for several years will most likely have a better grasp of the best technology than newer companies will.
Residential solar energy is becoming more popular every day because solar panels for homes are more cost and energy efficient in the long run. The initial installation can be very pricey (in the thousands for the average home), but it will eventually be worth it. Your electricity bill will decrease, and if you end up storing enough energy in your power grid, electric companies will even pay for that excess energy. In addition, you will be helping the environment.

Installing a Shower Head Extension
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Garden on January 17th, 2011
We need help with a lot of things in daily life. We need accountants to keep track of our finances, electricians to repair wires, and doctors to care for our health. One thing you will not need, however, is a plumber to install a shower head extension.
A bathroom is an incredibly important room in the life of a family. It marks the good start of a day and sometimes is a relaxing end to a stressful one. Your bathroom, then, must be complete with all the necessary amenities, and more. Walk in shower enclosures, thermostatic shower mixers, and non slip shower mats are great additions to any shower, but a shower head extension is one of those upgrades that your bathroom shower just cannot do without.
A shower head extension is a replacement to your regular shower head that can be adjusted. With a shower head extension you can change the height and direction of your shower as desired. A shower head extension is great for families with members of significantly different heights who use the same shower. With a shower head extension a really tall father can take a shower in the same bathroom as a ten year old, with neither having to adjust to fixed shower height and direction.
You may think that a shower head extension is something very useful to have, but with the great changes it brings it probably demands great effort to acquire as well. Do not be discouraged, because a shower head extension is easily available in the home store nearest you, and is also no hassle at all to install. You do not even need a plumber in installing your shower head extension, and you can actually do it yourself. With a wrench and very basic plumbing knowledge you can just take off your old inflexible shower head and install your new one.
If you wish to keep your old shower head, there are shower head extensions that are attachable to a regular shower head. Installing shower head extension does not require any changes in your current plumbing system.
Identifying Termites Activity In Your Home
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Garden on January 16th, 2011
How do you know if your house has termites? There are many signs of termites that homeowners should watch out for. The first thing any home owner should do is look to see if there are any bugs around. Termites come in many forms. One of the most common is the flying termite.
The flying termite looks like an ant with wings. This type of termite is one of the first that you might see in a house that has a termite problem. There are many ways to tell the difference between the ant and termite. First flying or winged termites have straight antennae. They also have an equally proportioned waste which is different for an ant. Once you are aware of what the termite looks like, it is easy for you to spot it on the quick.
One of the most common places to see these termites is around windows and doors. Any light will attract the termites and this is why they go to doors and windows first. Look around the foundation of your house to spot the termites. Remember that seeing one in the back or front yard on some old wood is not a good indicator that you have a termite infestation problem. On the other hand, if you see them crawling around your foundation, you might be infested. Next you want to look for dirt tubes around the walls and foundations. If there is a termite infestation, you will have these dirt tubes all over the place. You want to look for damaged wood as well. The wood will look like it has been eaten away and may have tubes or tracks going through it. It will look like hollowed out wood.
Many times there may be no outward signs of termite infestations because it takes these small but destructive creatures a period of time to get to the point where it is obvious that there is damage. If you think you have termites, contact a professional right away.
With Pond Filters Good Maintenance Is Key
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Garden on January 15th, 2011
Keeping your fish pond filter in pristine condition is important for both the appearance of the pond as well as the health of the fish. The main function of pond filters is to keep the water clean, flowing freely and to remove any foreign material such as bits of fish food or other substances. The size of pond filters is extremely important with the approximate number of fish being the main factor to consider in size calculation. The rule of thumb dictates it is better to have a filter that is a bit too large than to have one that is too small.
Maintaining the filter in pristine condition is not as daunting a task as it seems. The first step is to determine if the fish pond filter needs cleaning can readily be indicated by whether the water is flowing freely and properly. Spring is the best time to clean since this will allow ample time for beneficial bacteria to redevelop. Cleaning in the fall is only recommended if leaves and other debris can be seen floating on top of the water.
If possible the fish should be relocated to a bucket filled with pond water. Once this is accomplished the filter should be carefully removed and placed in a bucket filled with pond water as well. If tap water is used certain chemicals contained therein can destroy the healthy bacteria needed for optimum filter function.
When cleaning the filter, only clogged areas should be dealt with using a small brush to carefully remove algae and other vegetational matter. The main reason for not attacking the entire surface of the filter is to avoid destruction of beneficial bacteria especially at certain times of the year such as late fall or early winter. The surface of the filter should be carefully examined to remove any shredded or otherwise damaged portion of the filter. At the same time the pad and sponge portion of the filter should be carefully rinsed and allowed to dry properly. If the color appears not to return to its normal state these parts must also be replaced.
Once the filter is cleaned and reassembled with any necessary parts replaced, the final step is to test the water in order to access the necessity of restoring proper balance of bacteria. If testing indicates bacterial replacement, proper supplies can be purchased from a pet or fish specialty shop
