A flat garage roof is actually not such a bad construction either. After all, all the roof really has to do, is to keep whatever is underneath it dry. As long as the angle of the roof surface is steep enough to drain away rainwater, then the roof fulfills its purpose. With that said, we all know that flat roofs historically are prone to error and malfunction. In part, this is because flat roofs used to be completely flat in some areas, partly because it was believed that the roofing felt laid on these roofs benefited from being wet at all times. The problem that became apparent, was that the woodwork underneath the felt did not benefit from the water, that eventually always managed to creep through and cause rot, mold and what not.
But today, most roofers know how to avoid these pitfalls. They know that a roof has to have a certain minimum angle to it, in order to drain away the water efficiently, and to keep a safe margin of error to any small areas of the roof which may for some reason not have the desired slope, or even be sloping the wrong way.
When you ask a roofer for a roof quote on a flat roof, you should remember to talk about the size of the roof in question and how much slope or angle you need on it. Of course, if you want single sloping roof, but the roof surface is so large that even a shallow angle becomes a large difference in height from one end to another, then you might want to think differently about the problem. The experienced roofer may then suggest that you actually have pitched roof don’t, but one where the two slopes are still shallow enough that it qualifies as a flat roof. This way, you effectively cut the difference in height in two.
