Their are many different forms of exercise to choose from these days. The most common would be running, biking, and stepping, although swimming may also be considered. However which of all of these is the most effective, or better yet which is more effect between stepping and biking? Although you would need more data than I am able to collect for this type of question, ill answer it as best I can with my knowledge.
For starters, when i do a step workout, I tend to use my air climber exercise machine which is a specially designed stair master, which helps me in particular with my bad knees. This particular machine makes the idea of stepping more fun than usual, especially since you can do it in the comfort of your own home which I always thought was the best way to workout.
When looking at stationary bikes however, you may want to note that unless you have a large gym style area, or large garage, fitting one of these in the home will not be much of an option. If you are able to get the machine into your home and begin using it, you may find that the way in which the seat is setup on most of these machines is rather uncomfortable. One of the keys to workout longevity is comfort, and I do not believe that the stationary bike takes care of this department.
When its all said and done, not only will the stair master help you burn more calories, but it is more comfortable and portable as well. Air Climbers specifically enable people to workout in a more relaxed fashion, while still maintaing a high level of intensity and calorie burn.
At the end of the day its not the type of machine you use, rather it is how much effort you put into using it.
